Using Tcl Virtual Filesystems for Complex Data Management

Author: Steven Huntley

Abstract

While trying to apply Tcl virtual filesystems as solutions to a variety of complex problems, two chief issues presented themselves: the complexity of the Tclvfs API as a barrier to rapid development, and lack of scalability when "stacking" vfs's one atop another. To resolve these issues, I developed a template vfs. This template allowed quick authoring of virtual filesystems with sophisticated functions, such as versioning and enforcement of quotas. The template approach allows a new vision of virtual filesystems as an analog to pipes, passing information through an unlimited series of well-defined transformations via a clean shared interface.
